Pre-E3 2008 Gears of War II
Players: 1+ Player Game | Genre: Action
With the release of the original Gears of War, Epic Games and Microsoft both ushered in the first title to completely erase Halo 2 from the minds of Xbox owners. Although the original Gears of War was popular, the game had a few shortcomings and fans begged for more. Fear not GoW faithful, your cries have been heard from Microsoft and Epic. Coming later this year is a much improved Gears of War 2.
Visually, Gears of War 2 will look very similar to the original. The sequel will use the same Unreal 3 Engine but will showcase some new technologies under the hood. The details of the characters will be improved and the game will sport a higher resolution feel to it. This is due to the improved lighting effects and details in shadows. The visual improvements do not end there. New to the Unreal 3 Engine is the ability to show the damage your character makes to the environment. With the new visual upgrades, Gears of War 2 should be one of the best looking Xbox 360 titles out there.
Epic and Microsoft are both staying pretty quiet about the story in Gears of War 2. The majority of players were all very disappointed with the story in the first chapter of the series. We have been promised that the action will pick up immediately after the first game and focus on the search for Dom's wife. But what we have seen quite a bit of are the incredibly fun multiplayer modes. The three modes that have been shown are Guardian, Submission, and Wingman.
In Guardian, there are two teams and one member of each is randomly given the role of leader. The goal is to protect you own leader and to take out the enemies leader. While the leader is alive, you will respawn every 15 seconds if you die.
In Submission, each team seeks out a NPC to take hostage. Once you find him, you will need to take him to a specific spot and leave him there for a small amount of time. Epic places a variety of obstacles in your way from taking the NPC hostage. For starters they are armed and there are a variety of elements in the world that your team has to assist you in disabling--in addition to worrying about the other team.
Finally, in Wingman, you participate in a ten man game that pairs everyone into teams of two. Both you and your teammate will look identical. It is your job to kill anyone that doesn't look like you.
One really big exciting enhancement to the multiplayer modes are that when you are being shot, it will slow you down. This will ensure that if you charge opposing players, you will realistically be stopped if you are being hit by bullets. To avoid being shot, players do have the option to take enemies hostage and use them as shields.
Overall, Gears of War 2 should be a hit when it releases later this year. We do expect Microsoft to reveal more details about the game during E3 so be sure to keep reading for the latest.
