Skullcandy PLYR 1
Players: | Release Date: 04/28/17 | Genre: Accessory
The Skullcandy PLYR 1 is a wireless headset and retails at $179.99. Compare this to the retail $299.99 for Astro Gaming’s wireless A50 headset. This really sets it in a league where quality and value meet to give the player an awesome product. The PLYR 1 features 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound to wrap the players in the sounds that the gamemakers expected to be heard. And as a wireless headset, this is all done with no wires to get in the way. Did we mention this headset, like all of Astro’s offerings, will work on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms? This raises the bar for what can be included in a $179.99 package.
Also included in the package are three preset settings to adjust the audio for what you are playing or watching. There is a toggle for movies and music, single player games, and multiplayer games. The Skullcandy PLYR 1 also features cloth-lined ear cups that are shaped like your ear. Personally, I prefer the larger ear cups found on the A50 but I quickly got accustomed to the ones on the PLYR 1. When you are talking about saving a hundred and twenty bones, you can get used to quite a lot!
Like the Astro A50, flipping up the microphone, which doesn’t come detached, will mute the Skullcandy PLYR 1. This is one of my favorite features on a headphone and glad to see it made the transition to the PLYR 1 from the A50. One thing that didn’t make the transition are any movement on the ear cups. On the A50’s, you can swivel them out and wear the headset easily around your neck. This was not added to the PLYR 1 and is a feature I have used quite often with the A50.
Astro assures us that we will get ten to fifteen hours of battery life per charge. With all of the marathon gaming sessions I have been doing, I was getting this easily. In fact, I would say that the Skullcandy PLYR 1 was getting more battery and had a larger range than even the more expensive Astro A50! This shocked me quite a bit since I was already satisfied with both on the A50.
The Skullcandy PLYR 1 retails for $179.99 and comes in white and black (Our review unit was white). For now, Best Buy is the exclusive retailer for the device but we were told, during our time at E3, that this may expand in the future. So head to Best Buy now to give the Skullcandy PLYR 1 a try and see why it is my new favorite headset at under two hundred dollars.
