Spyro the Dragon is a franchise that sold many copies on the PlayStation. However, the little purple dragon hasn’t seen any action on the PlayStation 2 yet. After re-obtaining the rights to Spyro, Universal Interactive spent time developing two new titles for the GBA. Next up for Spyro is the long awaited PS2 follow-up to the franchise. Spyro Enter the Dragonfly at first seems like the re-birth of the franchise. But after spending a little time with the title, you will be left with the feeling that it was a little bit rushed.
The first thing most evident about this sequel is the visual quality. These graphics are absolutely breathtaking. The world seems alive with characters talking with moving lips, heads move around, eyes blink, etc. However, while the graphics look wonderful, they also cause a problem. The game cannot keep up with the action on the screen. If you move Spyro in another direction, forcing the camera to re-position itself, the game becomes jerky and slows down. So while the graphics are very nice looking, the slowdown ruins the experience
Controlling Spyro is very similar to prior titles in the series. You can make him jump, dash, breathe fire, bubbles, ice, electricity, glide, hover, head bash, and protect himself with his wings. Also, by hitting the triangle button, the camera will re-center behind Spyro. If you need to find a better camera angle, the right analog stick can also be used to accomplish this.
The sound and music are pretty average. But the bottom line is that Spyro Enter the Dragonfly is a pretty standard platformer. In fact, with the low framerate, I kept feeling that Univeral Interactive rushed the developers. Being a fan of the franchise in the past, not to mention enjoy playing the current GBA titles, I am afraid to rate this title lower than I want to. Sure, I could justify giving a higher score and talk about the variety in levels and the length of gameplay. But if the game suffers with such a big flaw as the framerate and it plays like an average platformer, is there a reason for me to continue on with this review? Sadly, I must say no.
