Skylanders creator, and Developer, Toys for Bob took the last game off to work on the next big thing for Skylanders. Today, we finally know what they have been working on: Skylanders Trap Team. Revealed at an event in New York City, Skylanders has some new tricks up their sleeves to get you to open up your wallet for more fun. The goal with all of the Skylanders games is to bring toys to life. This time, however, they wanted to reverse the magic and bring something new to life.

Kaos is back but this time he isn’t alone. He has destroyed the prison in Skylands that kept the most dangerous “bad guys” in all the land. With Kaos, there are 40 bad guys that were released from the traptanium they were housed in. Now it is up to the Skylanders, Skylanders Giants, and Skylanders Swap Force to join up with the Skylanders Trap Team to capture all of the “bad guys” and turn them into “good guys.”

Players will use a brand new portal of power that has a slot for a traptanium crystal shard and a speaker in it. In the demo shown, the Skylanders Trap Team member Snap Shot defeats a Chompy Mage in a fight. Once they are defeated, a traptanium crystal shard is placed in the portal of power and you can hear the Chompy Mage fly from your TV and into the traptanium in front of you. Each traptanium will house 4 bad guys. If we speculate for a moment, there are 8 elements. Doing the math, that means 32 enemies can be captured—leaving 8 left over. Does this mean we will see two new elements introduced in the near future? It makes sense.

With the traptanium holding up to four bad guys, and a character on the portal, players will be able to have access to up to five characters at the same time that they can swap between. Yes, the bad guys turn into good guys when you capture them! Of course, all of your old Skylanders will also be compatible with Trap Team. There will still be 2 player co-op but beyond that, the team isn’t talking. They might have something else to say about multiplayer in the near future.

Additional traps will be sold by themselves so you won’t have to buy a bundle to get them. This is good news! Also, there will be 50 new Skylanders but the team will not comment on how many will be male or female or how many of those 50 are returning characters. They also, surprisingly, didn’t speak about Lightcore characters.

The length of the game will be “on par with other games.” Hopefully, this means the experience will be closer to Giants in length rather than Swap Force—-which was a bit short. Skylanders Trap Team will release on October 5, 2014 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Sadly, the PC is being left out again.

We should be seeing some more about Skylanders Trap Team coming up at E3 2014!
