When you have Keiji Inafune, the father and Co-Creator of Mega Man, involved in a project, people tend to take notice. Such is the case with Mighty No. 9. This game was a Kickstarter project that raised nearly 4 million dollars by over 67,000 fans. And soon fans across the globe will be able to get their hands on a action platformer that is challenging and rewarding.

Players take control of Beck, the 9th combat robot and he is thrown into a world of chaos where robots are all turning violent due to a virus. This has also impacted the other 8 Robots in the line that Dr. White has created and it is your job to help bring them back to their senses.

Players will instantly find the world of Mighty No. 9 to be reminiscent of the Mega Man series. You run, jump, and shoot with a blast just like the iconic Blue Bomber. All of this is done within a friendly and old school feel in a 2D world. Players will shoot, stun, and dash into enemies. This gives you their powers for a short time and also gives you a score multiplier. Linking enemy stuns and dashes together will increase your score and give you a better grade at the end of the level. Lets say that my scores weren’t the best. I was having a difficult time linking dashes together fast enough. The slower you are dashing into an enemy, after stunning them, the lower the multiplier is.

Though we only had a little time to play each level that was on display, it is shaping up to be very good. Gaining a characters powers is an interesting mechanic. But I think the biggest plus to Mighty No. 9 are the boss fights. These are difficult fights that will leave you throwing your controller to the ground like the “good old days.” While we won’t know for sure if this title can become the next iteration of Mega Man, it is well on its way to making us forget about Capcom’s little Blue Bomber.
